IMPOSTER SYNDROME

Jul 03, 2021
Google says, “Impostor syndrome (also known as impostor phenomenon, impostorism, fraud syndrome or the impostor experience) is a psychological pattern in which an individual doubts their skills, talents or accomplishments and has a persistent internalized fear of being exposed as a "fraud.”
When I first read this definition I thought, “Wow, I totally relate to that.” But as I thought about it more I realized this is such a common and MAJOR theme on our music journey and life in general. How many times have we not done something due to it? How many times have we compared ourselves to someone else and decided that we aren’t good enough and just quit? I know this is an intense statement but I personally believe that imposter syndrome may be the #1 reason people give up on their music careers.
So, how can we beat imposter syndrome? The way we can overcome it is by not comparing ourselves to other people. I believe the root of imposter syndrome is comparison, and in most cases, comparison to people that are much MUCH further along than we are. When we look at someone who has “made it” or achieved the goals we one day hope to, we are ignoring all of the struggles and sacrifices they made to get there. By ignoring their journeys we trick ourselves into believing that if we can’t instantly achieve all of our hopes and dreams, than there is something wrong with us.
If we can become confident and excited about our own journey, then we won’t be burdened and held back by comparing ourselves to others and feeling like we are not as far along as we should be. Even if we did our best to 100% copy someone else’s journey, we would not be able to do it. Even further, if we were somehow able to copy someone else’s journey, it would not be fulfilling because it would not be the road we are meant to travel. So thinking about it logically, if we can’t follow someone else’s road-map (and even if we could) it would not fulfill us, then why should we try?
You are good enough, you are able, and YOU CAN ACHIEVE YOUR DREAMS IN MUSIC. I think a huge part of that is accepting the gifts and blessings you’ve been given, owning it, and walking the road that has been laid out before you. Imposter syndrome is something we probably all deal with and struggle with at some point, but I believe that the first step in overcoming it, is to become laser-focused on our specific journey and go ALL IN!
What are some ways you’ve dealt with imposter syndrome recently on your music journey? Would love to hear and discuss in the comments!
