Raw Talent is NOT Enough

Oct 14, 2022

I was recently talking to my good friend Ross King on the latest episode of the CIAS podcast about raw talent, and if it’s enough on it’s own to make it in the music industry.

One of the most mysterious parts of a music journey is raw talent. Where does it come from? Why do some people seem to get so much of it, and how much does it really matter?

Raw talent definitely plays a critical part in a music journey as it is the foundation for someone’s skill level.  Without any measure of raw talent it is difficult to excel in areas that we aren’t gifted in.

Although raw talent is important, it is NOT enough on its own.  We have probably all met people who are extremely talented in areas but have not seemed to go as far as they might be able to. Talent will get you in the door but things like work ethic, consistency, personality etc will keep you getting invited back to opportunities.

It is important to do all we can to consistently develop the measure of talent we have been given. The combination of hard work and relationships are the 2 things that will take the talent we have and push us to the next level. So if you feel like you have not been blessed with enough raw talent in a certain area, my encouragement to you and myself is to work hard and develop the talents we do have.

As we develop all the areas, they will feed into each other and be better overall. This will help us to be well-rounded and go as far as we can on our music journey.

“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace:” 1 Peter 4:10
